Generic rule engines usually don’t start as a bad idea.
They start as a reasonable reaction to repeated pain.
Too many conditionals.
Too many releases for small logic changes.
Too many “just change this one if-condition” requests.
So someone proposes a rule engine.
And slowly, quietly, the system rots.
The Real Motivation (Not the Stated One)
Teams say they want:
- Flexibility
- Configurability
- Business-controlled logic
What they actually want is:
- To stop touching fragile code
- To avoid accountability for logic changes
- To push decision-making away from compile time
A rule engine is chosen not because it’s better, but because it feels safer than editing code that nobody fully understands.

Rule Engines Don’t Remove Logic — They Bury It

Rule engines turn debugging into historical reconstruction.
By the time you find the issue, the context is gone.
Performance Is the Quiet Casualty
Rule engines age badly.
As rules grow:
- Evaluation order starts mattering
- Short-circuiting becomes accidental

All because decisions were added independently, without a system-level model.
Where Rules Actually Belong

Rules should answer:

If Your Rule Engine Needs These, You’re Already Lost

At that point, you’re not configuring behavior.
You’re rebuilding a programming language—without tooling, safety, or discipline.
That’s not flexibility.
That’s deferred failure.
The Better Question
Instead of asking:
“How do we design a generic rule engine?”
Ask:
“Which decisions change often, and how tightly can we constrain them?”
The tighter the constraint, the safer the system.
The more generic the engine, the higher the long-term cost.

Rule engines are rarely a sign of system maturity.
They’re a sign of fear—fear of touching code, fear of refactoring, fear of ownership.
Rules are logic.
Logic deserves the same discipline as code.
If you treat logic as data,
your system will eventually treat correctness as optional.
